Choosing and Using Text-to-Speech Software

This learning module is a guide to successful consideration, selection, and implementation of text-to-speech software for individual users. Topics include:

  • Practical and research-supported uses for teaching and learning
  • Key considerations for the Individual Education Program (IEP) team
  • Typical characteristics of text-to-speech programs
  • Access to and creation of electronic curriculum materials
  • Specific software products on the market

Each of the above questions is comprehensively considered and addressed to provide a contemporary, thorough, and coherent understanding of assistive technology and its use in educational settings. The following learning outcomes will be addressed by module:

  • Typical characteristics of both basic and feature-rich text-to-speech programs
  • Key considerations when choosing a text-to-speech program
  • The uses of text-to-speech software for supporting reading and writing skills
  • Options for accessing and creating digital curriculum materials
  • Specific examples of text-to-speech software products available on the market

Continuing Education Units (CEUs)
