An Introduction to Assistive Technology
This learning module provides an introduction to assistive technology by addressing the following common questions and concerns:
- What is assistive technology?
- What is a public school's obligation to provide assistive technology to students with disabilities?
- What types of assistive technology are available?
- What best practices might be adopted to ensure that assistive technology is appropriately considered, selected, and implemented in students' educational programs?
Each of the above questions is comprehensively considered and addressed to provide a contemporary, thorough, and coherent understanding of assistive technology and its use in educational settings. The following learning outcomes will be addressed by module:
Participants will know:
- Assistive technology is both a device and a service
- Individualized Education Program (IEP) teams are required under law to consider assistive technology
- Assistive technology is used for the input, output, and processing of electronic information
- Best practice for considering, selecting, and implementing assistive technology in a student’s education program is achieved by conducting a properly structured assistive technology assessment
